Motivation

Reading Assignment

  • The Art of Dramatic Writing, Pages 125 to 218
  • Guidelines and Advice (For WVU Workshops)
  • Alternate Reading: The Art of Creative Writing, Pages 111 to 193

Final Writing Assignment

  • Time allowed for completion
    • Story: 2 weeks
    • Critiques: 1 week
  • Story Submittal
    • Post your stories in the Classroom

Immediately after the readings, begin writing the first draft to a complete short story. You may use your scene from Assignment 3, or you may start a fresh story. The story should be character-driven, with clear motivations for both the antagonist and protagonist. Before submitting, check your story against Egri's Principles of Writing and adjust accordingly . When exchanging assignments with each other, use what you've learned from the readings to offer constructive criticism. For each critique, use a least one quote from one of Egri's books ... he has some powerful ones sprinkled in there.    Everyone should do at least two critiques. If you have time to do more, that's even better. Try to make sure everyone gets a critique.

Suggested word count: 2000 to 3000 words.

Have fun!
